Winter Cottage

In Finland many people spend part of their winter staying in a Winter Cottage, to get away from the bustle of normal life and live simply for a time. Once Ben and I were offered the opportunity to stay in a friend’s winter cottage – one day we hope to take up their offer or stay in another such cottage in winter – and when we asked how to get there we were told that one must drive to the nearby road, which is about a mile from the cottage, and then ski the rest of the way with luggage on a sled behind. I believe this particular cottage also has no electricity or running water – life revolves around the indoor sauna and the outdoor well, the water in which must first be defrosted.

This painting was not of any particular winter cottage but of this Finnish tradition in general. Such a change in lifestyle – such a wonderful contrast to the comfort and ease taken for granted by most of us in the UK all year round.
