Calm Sea

When Ben and I were planning our wedding, Ben’s first priority was that we would take our honeymoon ‘somewhere where the sea is blue’. That lovely light blue – almost turquoise and very clear – that is seen in beautifully warm countries. We found ourselves on Langkawi, an island of Malaysia, in a cabin on the edge of a thick forest/jungle, directly facing the sea which was that blue. It was a perfect combination of relaxation and exploration – we spent time in the jungle finding out about different large insects, poisonous trees, brightly coloured plants and creatures – and of course time on the beach and in the warm sea. It was touristy but with very few Western tourists – mostly people visiting from South East Asia – so to us it didn’t feel too much like a ‘tourist holiday’. We went out on boat trips watching the eagles above and being told about the different species; we went on Mangrove trails and learnt about how these ingenious plants and their roots saved the island’s wildlife on a number of occasions; we swam and learnt to jet-ski in the beautiful blue sea – it was perfect. This painting does not quite capture that blue – I am yet to find even a photograph that depicts the strong feeling of its bold colour – but the combination of thick forest and blue sea in the painting shows a very little of what our honeymoon was like.

Acrylic on 30x40cm (approx. 12″x16″) stretched canvas (sides painted), ready to hang.
