Autumn Forest

Trees are always something that I’ve struggled to paint, but longed to learn how. I have tried a few short online tutorials and attempted to follow instructions within a few art books, but always felt clumsy and frustrated when painting trees in the foreground. So one day a few months ago I told myself I would paint a very simple Autumn forest with tree trunks in the foreground and autumnal colours in the background. I was nervous about painting this scene and put it off for quite some time, but finally got around to it – and this was the result. When I eventually began painting it, I found it pleasant and liberating, a happy experience, which I had not particularly expected – and ever since I have been meaning to take it a stage further and do another similar scene but with more detail. For now I am surprisingly happy with this simple picture. (Perhaps next I will attempt faces, or possibly even hands…)

Acrylic on 30x40cm (approx. 12″x16″) stretched canvas, with sides painted and ready to hang.
