This simple painting is moody, desolate, almost lonely – despite the colours in the sky it depicts a bleak outlook on life with just a small glimmer of hope for a brighter tomorrow. Silhouettes are unique in that everything looks to be made of ‘the same stuff’ – this picture makes use of that; the lonely mountains united in their blackness yet separated by a lake of colour and reflected light from the sky. This could be representative of bereavement or similar loss – those affected often feel very alone in their mourning yet united in that very thing. A friend recovering from cancer recently commented that it is like being enrolled in an exclusive club – between cancer survivors is a camaraderie unmatched by other friendships – people can relate to one another in their past and present pain and so support one another and stand together. A community united by suffering.
