A few months ago Ben went away on a friend’s Stag weekend, and I had the flat to myself. Excited about the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time painting, I had laid out canvasses, brushes and paints, and I sat looking at a blank canvas on the easel. I didn’t have any ideas or thoughts about what I might paint, and began dabbing in blue, wondering what the picture would turn into. When I had covered the whole canvas in blue I found myself wondering what Ben and his mates were up to, and it occurred to me that I could paint a solitary and majestic stag, standing alone in front of the patch of light, showing the world his glorious silhouette. And so it was. (Ben returned from the weekend and laughed at me, at the way my mind works: that because he was on a stag weekend I would paint a stag…)
