Cliffs and Waves

Acrylic on 10.5″ x 7.5″ artist paper, mounted, framed and ready to hang.

Have you ever read the Moomin books by Tove Janssen? I thoroughly recommend them. They are written in a refreshingly simple and childlike manner but grapple with many of the huge issues that we may face in life. One of the later books, which I believe is all about grief, involves the Moomin family moving away from Moomin Valley and onto an island in the middle of nowhere, and inhabiting the lighthouse there. For a large part of the book we see Moominpappa frustratedly trying, with vigorous determination, to understand the sea so that he can control it and live comfortably with it – but the sea bluntly refuses to be tamed or understood. Moominpappa comes to realise that the sea is bigger, stronger and more stubborn than he, and that he should accept the fact that he will never be able to control it and may always be surprised by its behaviour. The sea is beautiful and dangerous, fun and playful, huge and menacing. I love to stand on the beach and just watch the waves, listening to their fury and their rhythm, and stilling my soul. Perhaps this painting captures a little of that stillness that can come through gazing upon such a tremendous beast that is the sea.
