Quite different to my usual style, the bold shapes and contrasts of this dramatic painting reminds me of the animated TV shows of my childhood. Being fortunate enough to live in Gloucestershire, I love being surrounded by hills which are visible on all sides from some parts of the village. Hills are somehow skilled at uniting people of all ages and backgrounds; bringing top business-people back to the ground; encouraging children to explore and dream. Hills are an equaliser between rich and poor – a place for community and for strong friendships to begin and develop, but also for necessary solitude at times. Hills have a unique music to them that manages to bring the best out of people. One of my favourite things to do is to walk up a hill just as the sun is beginning to set; watching the sky change colour as I walk, and looking over a town or village below as the lights begin to switch on. There is something innately special about hills that is unmatched by any other natural beauty. I named this painting after Leckhampton hill, but really it could be anywhere – anywhere where the hills capture the imagination, making the soul want to dance and filling people with comfort and joy.
