There is a certain kind of sunset that I find really delicately beautiful. It is usually found in winter, and is usually sort of purple-lilac with yellow. This painting was inspired by lake Titicaca in Bolivia/Peru, where Ben and I took his parents on holiday once. Surrounded by purple mountains, the cold lake gleamed in the soft yellow light. When we were there we visited the floating islands too – residents of the surrounding villages had tied large bundles of reeds together into blocks and fastened the blocks together to make small floating islands which they then constructed tents on and lived on. These little islands were impressively crafted, as were the reed boats that residents use to travel between the islands and back to the mainland. What a life, living on such lovely little islands on Lake Titicaca, surrounded by hills and mountains and sunsets that take the breath away.
