Tango Legs

I must ask forgiveness from any Tango dancers out there – the ‘Gancho’ (or hook) depicted here is an impossible (or at the very least incorrect) move. This did not occur to me as I was painting it, but as soon as I finished I realised my error: the woman is not led to Gancho if the man’s forward leg is straight!
My Tango teacher saw this painting and immediately exclaimed, ‘No!’ – it took a mere split second before this strong reaction erupted from him; and I imagine other dancers will feel the same way. However, what has been painted has been painted, and I don’t intend to change it now. Despite the characters’ positioning being at fault, I love this painting anyway – the strong connection between the dancers is evident and the joy with which the woman hooks her leg around the man’s is shown even through the legs themselves. I am particularly partial to crimson dresses and crimson heels; and the red and black of this painting offers an atmosphere of intensity which is lightened by the soft, pale skin of the woman’s legs. It is a happy painting, which both compliments and contrasts against the intensity of the dark background and the late-evening-dance atmosphere.
