Few things are lovelier than a few hours sitting by a lake, surrounded by trees, doing very little. At University I met a Finnish student who had always lived in the countryside and was used to having a few hours each day simply sitting by the nearby lake and pondering life – the pace and pressure of British life, even in a small city like Gloucester, came as a shock to her. What a fantastic lifestyle – the freedom and flexibility, the priority of thoughtfulness and quiet contemplation each day – what wonder and beauty! And what fantastic productivity must come from this shift in priorities – if people can approach working life from a place of restedness, having had time to slow down and think; having priorities shaped around what is meaningful. Finland is known for having the world’s best education system among other impressive achievements nationally – I think we can learn a thing or two from this beautiful culture and its underlying attitudes.
