Hope

The colours in this picture fill me with energy and hope, and motivate me to face the day. What a contrast – warm colours of the autumnal leaves with the cool of the snow – and the multicoloured water that looks so warm and feels so cold. It reminds me in part of when we went hiking up a mountain in Kazakhstan – the ground was covered with splendid tulips of many different colours – the most magnificent tulips we had ever seen, and wild! When we neared the top of the mountain we found a great deal of snow everywhere, which must have been rapidly melting as there were lovely sparkling pools which were as clear as glass and cold as ice, and the air was still very warm. This picture in a way couldn’t be more different from that memory – it is a forest and river, not a mountain top – but the colours and the contrasts bring those memories back to me. It is an image that represents hope in times of despair – the snow will melt; the tulips will grow; the sky will fill with colour. Even in the bitter cold of winter the bright, bold, warm colours will break through and the world will flood with light.
