Misty Autumn Forest

Have you ever walked slowly through a forest in the morning mist, soaking in its almost magic feeling and not daring to make a sound in case you spoil it? I used to volunteer at a beautiful retreat centre in the Yorkshire Dales and I would go walking alone in the hills on my afternoons off, blissfully enjoying the life and presence of the trees and just loving being surrounded by forest on all sides. I would get lost time after time but would always find my way back in the end. I loved going to the Dales especially because at the time where we were there was no Internet access (or very limited) and no mobile phone signal on any network – so there was little chance of distraction or of being called back down to ‘reality’ – little connection with the rest of the world and with normal life. The forest, to me, was always a mysterious and almost secretive place, full of life and undeclared beauty that could so easily go unnoticed. On a misty day this sense of secrecy and mystery was heightened and it seemed to me the most wonderful place on earth. I dared even to breathe lest I spoil it. This painting does not even begin to capture that feeling, but perhaps it is a start – the beginning of an adventure in the forest; the start of a journey of imagination where we allow ourselves to be lost, wild and free, unrestrained by time and commitments and phones and all the other things we are tied to.
